If you’re lucky enough to be somewhere warm right now—well, frankly, I don’t want to hear about it (or see your Instagrams either). The rest of us are dealing with subzero temperatures and flaky, dry, irritated skin. And if you have a fair complexion, chances are it’s also looking pretty dull and ghostly right about now. I asked makeup artist Nick Barose, the man behind Gillian Jacobs’s pretty, glow-y look from Monday’s Girls premiere, how to achieve a radiant—dare I say dewy?—glow in the depths of winter. Here, three easy rules to follow—and you’ll notice that not one of them involves bronzer.
Don’t skimp on moisturizer. OK, this is technically a skin-care tip, but it’s actually helpful to think of it as a step in your makeup routine because it’s the best way to achieve a dewy, glow-y complexion before you even think about busting out the highlighter. “Spend extra time massaging it in to boost skin’s natural glow,” says Barose. “Be generous with it, and don’t forget your neck.”
Stay away from anything powdery. “Powder can make fair skin look duller,” says Barose. Instead, he recommends using a moisturizing CC cream that’s one shade warmer than your skin tone.
Use a liquid highlighter. For the most natural effect, Barose recommends applying a liquid highlighter with a damp BeautyBlender sponge.
