We wanted to share with you the information we shared with OurSkinny.com when they asked us to “weigh in” on Summer Skincare!
Before you head out for vacation or to the beach, you might want to take advantage these tips!
Prepare to bare!
Our clients are always surprised to hear this but you can actually pre-load yourself with sunscreen!
Before a beach vacation you can actually “prepare to bare” by wearing sunscreen on your body every night. We tell our clients to do it for two to three weeks ahead so the sunscreen builds up in their stratum corneum, and makes their skin less likely to burn.
Our favorite body sunscreen is actually a powder formula by Colorescience. It is waterproof and sweatproof and lasts up to 12 hours and is invisible on the skin and never oily!
Better yet, this line of products is made with natural and nourishing ingredients that help maintain healthy skin, including vitamin E and beta carotene to nourish the complexion while protecting against free radical damage.
Scrub and exfoliate more often.
Your skin looks best when it is smooth enough to reflect light, and when you’re under 20, your skin cells turn over every 28 days.
By your 20s, turnover slows, and between 30 and 40, that rate slows to every 40 days. Dead skin cells pile up, diffusing the light and making skin dull. Slough them away by exfoliating at night as opposed to in the morning—you’ll also remove all the gunk from the day.
Need another reason to incorporate a scrub into your skincare regime this summer?
Pores also look more obvious in hot, humid weather. We advise our clients to add one extra exfoliation session per week, and I recommend a polishing scrub that gives you control over the intensity, like Revision’s Finishing Touch scrub.
Simplify your pre-sun ritual.
If it’s summertime and the living is easy, your skincare regime should be easy too.
‘Tis the season to slow down and simplify, and for that I recommend Colorescience Skin Bronzing Face Primer SPF 20, a 3-in-1 primer, sun protection product and bronzer.
This foundation primer provides a golden-brown tint that is at once subtle and radiant, offering excellent defense against UVA and UVB rays that cause signs of aging and damage. This product also creates an even tone and texture so your mineral cosmetics apply flawlessly. Plus, the lightweight formula hydrates the complexion so your skin appears supple and dewy.
Start every day with this primer for an effortlessly radiant look. The subtle tint provides an instant glow and diminishes the appearance of imperfections and dark spots.
Make Your Body Glow Too!
If your face is radiant and bronzed and your body is ashy, it can look jarring.
Your glow will be much more believable if you highlight your body, too, but you don’t want to use straight-up highlighting cream. Tinted moisturizer is easier to blend and still gives you a glow. Smooth a little over your collarbones, shoulders, and shins.
You also might want to try Prtty Peaushun “Photoshop In A Pouch” body lotion. It just launched on Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP Website this month and sold out in just 3 hours! It is all organic, tightens skin, hides cellulite, and gives a hint of color. It is like makeup for your body that goes on like tinted moisturizer. It’s a good hydrator and won’t rub off on clothes like other tinted lotions can!
Oily or Combination Skin?
If you have oily skin, summer may be your least favorite season. You might feel self-conscious and extra-oily in the humid weather. Your skin can handle and, in fact, requires deeper exfoliation than other skin types, and so we have our clients combat the seasonal shine by doubling down on exfoliating.
We recommend using a salicylic acid–infused cleanser daily (try Multi-HA Cleanser from Young Pharm) and a gentle scrub with microbeads once a week (we like Revision Finishing Touch). The scrub sweeps away dead cells so the salicylic acid can clean clogged pores.
As far as in-office treatments go, a good chemical peel clears out the pores, kills bacteria inside, slows oil production, and tightens the look of your skin. A salicylic acid peel twice a month is the perfect way to keep breakouts and oily skin away. It can clear up dulling, dead skin cells, evening out any discoloration and drawing excess oil out of the pores. (If you live in Savannah, you can book an appointment online.)
Enjoy the summer sun (but be safe with your skin)!
