The Do’s & Don’ts After Getting a Facial

Facials are great for giving your skin a boost, but how can you make sure that the effects last? Here are some tips to get the most out of your next facial treatment.

1. Keep it clean. When is the last time you disinfected items you're in close contact with?

If you’re going to receive a facial, it’s important to disinfect any objects that could come into contact with your face afterward, such as your pillows or your phone. You don’t want any bacteria transferring onto your face!

To disinfect your phone, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol or make a disinfecting wipe from vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. To disinfect your pillows, you should wash your pillowcases with hot water, and put the pillows themselves in the dryer for 30 minutes on high heat.

2. Drink PLENTY of water.

Your skin can’t function properly without the water that hydrates it. And it can’t take in all those good-for-it ingredients if your pores are clogged. So, even if you’re used to relying on a mask or a serum to infuse your skin with life-giving hydration, you need to be sure to drink water throughout the day.

3. Avoid the sun.

After getting a facial, it’s best to stay out of the sun for at least a week to avoid irritating the skin. Use a hat to protect yourself from the sun right after treatment, and always apply sunscreen throughout the day.

4. Avoid using active ingredients for 48 hours.

It’s important to steer clear of active ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, and retinol while your skin is still vulnerable. Avoid using any exfoliating cleansers or products during this time. High-impact activities that cause perspiration and sebum can also cause irritation, so it’s best to steer clear of those as well.

5. No hot water on your face.

The key to getting the maximum benefit from a facial is to allow your skin time to absorb the products. You may be tempted to wash your face immediately after a facial, but you should try to resist this urge. If you do, you risk washing away the wonderful products that your skin has just absorbed.

6. Schedule hair removal wisely.

Don’t wax your face immediately after getting a facial. Make sure to take care of any hair removal/waxing beforehand, and if possible do this 24 hours before a facial. Your skin is more sensitive immediately after a facial, and the waxing process can aggravate the skin. This can lead to redness, irritation, and ingrown hairs.

7. Always avoid touching your face, but especially post-facial.

Your skin may feel wonderful, but touching it will prevent the skincare products from doing their job. You also don’t want to get any dirt or contamination onto your freshly clean skin via your fingers!

8. While pores are open and freshly clean, go makeup free.

The steam and thorough cleaning will have opened your pores, and a lot of cosmetic products have the potential to clog pores. After a good cleansing, give your skin a chance to breathe.

9. Skip the workout this time.

This is your guilt-free excuse to skip the gym just this once. It’s best to avoid exercising the same day as a facial since sweating can irritate your skin and counteract the benefits of the products used. You want to keep your skin cool and under control while it’s soaking up all those beneficial ingredients!
